Burghead Launch Day

Burghead coastal Rowing Club held their launch day on Saturday 1st of November under lovely sunny skies with a good number of local and some not so local clubs in attendance to show support. The Skiffties  were well represented with twelve club members on hand to crew Zulu joining skiffs and crews from Ardersier, Portsoy and Boatie Blest who had travelled all the way from Cockenzie and Port Seton. Everyone enjoyed the day and the ‘Tarbh Uisge’ or ‘water bull’ is a fine addition to the skiff fleet.

There are some good photos of the day on the website.

Loch Inch Sprints

The Skiffties were well represented at the very windy St. Ayles Skiff sprint races at Loch Inch watersports centre near Aviemore on Saturday 25th of October. This years event was split into regional teams and with our club members representing the North region and we more than held our own. Overall the North came second only to a powerhouse team from Fife and Angus and both Dave Ward and Judy Revell being in winning crews. Indeed Judy won both her races!! And she supplied some nice photos from the day which are now on the website. Kathy Taylor, Julie Kirkwood and Sally MacAdie all contributed valuable points to the team which included rowers from Coigach, Ulapool, Helmsdale, Collieston, Port Soy and Gairloch. Overall it was a great performance by everyone in really tricky conditions.

In the evening the SCRA held their AGM at the same venue with Kathy and Morgan representing the club. Minutes of the meeting will be posted on their website in the coming days.

ROWING TECHNIQUE

As many of us are novices when it comes to rowing a St. Ayles skiff we can all benefit from examples of good rowing techniques. Gosforth Rowing Club have an excellent guide on their website which is worth a look. It provides a very thorough guide to the basics of rowing. A bit like Kathy but quieter!!
Click the link below and it will open in a new window and well done to Roddy for finding it.

LAUNCH DAY

The BIG day is approaching. ‘Zulu’ will be officially named and launched on August 16th following a short parade from the harbour. The parade will be lead by the Avoch Herring Queen and a lone piper along the route followed by a short speech by Angus McWilliam.
We will be joined by our friends from Ardersier and Gairloch with their skiffs, ‘Esther’ and ‘Longa’ and once the ceremony is over there will be an opportunity to row the boats.
To finish the night off in style we will have a ceilidh in the shed with music by Feis Rios.

BOAT BUILDERS MEETING

Tuesday 3rd in the Station Hotel, Avoch at 6pm.
With the basic kit being ready for collection soon I think it would be a good idea to have a meeting next Tuesday for all those who would like to play a part in the skiff build. The meeting would help identify the strengths and weaknesses we have within the club not least of which is what tools we each have to offer up for the build. What we don’t have ourselves we will have to borrow or buy.
The link below is from the Ullapool website and has lots of pictures of one of their builds. As you can see we will need a lot of clamps!!!!

The SCRA website also has some helpful information too.
